A Guide To Success in Defence Exams in 2021

Defense exams are tests that are conducted to select candidates for various jobs in the Indian defense forces. The defense forces consist of three branches: the Indian Army, the Indian Navy, and the Indian Air Force. These branches protect the country from external and internal threats and also provide disaster relief. These exams serve as an opportunity for candidates to join the army, Navy, Air Force, or other defense forces.

Types of Defence Exams

National Defence Academy(NDA): The National Defence Academy exam is conducted by the UPSC for candidates who have passed the 12th class or equivalent. It is a two-stage exam that consists of a written test and a service selection board (SSB) interview.

Candidates who clear both stages are admitted to the NDA, where they undergo three years of training before joining the respective service branch.

Combined Defence Services (CDS): Combined Defence Services exam is also conducted by the UPSC for graduates who want to join the Indian Army, Navy, or Air Force as officers.

It is also a two-stage exam that consists of a written test and an SSB interview. Candidates who clear both stages are admitted to one of the following academies: Indian Military Academy (IMA), Indian Naval Academy (INA), Air Force Academy (AFA), or Officers’ Training Academy (OTA).

Air Force Common Admission Test(AFCAT): The Air Force Common Admission Test is conducted by the Indian Air Force for candidates who want to join the Air Force as officers in flying, ground duty, or technical branches. It is a single-stage exam that consists of an online test followed by an SSB interview and a medical examination. Candidates who clear all stages are admitted to the AFA.

Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF): The Central Armed Police Forces exam is conducted by the UPSC for candidates who want to join paramilitary forces such as BSF, CRPF, ITBP, CISF, or SSB as assistant commandant.

It is a three-stage exam that consists of a written test, a physical efficiency test, and an interview. Candidates who clear all stages are appointed as assistant commandants in one of the forces.

How to prepare for defense exams: Before starting your preparation, it is essential to thoroughly understand the exam pattern and syllabus of the specific defense exam you are targeting.

Familiarize yourself with the subjects, topics, and weightage of each section to create a study plan accordingly.

Collecting good study materials is important for your preparation. Along with standard textbooks, refer to recommended books specifically designed for defense exams.

Additionally, go through online resources such as mock tests, previous year question papers, and video tutorials to enhance your understanding and practice.

Creating a study plan is crucial to ensure good time management and discipline during your preparation. Find sufficient time for each subject and topic, giving more focus to areas where you need improvement. Break down your study sessions into smaller terms.

Defense exams are highly competitive, but with proper preparation, dedication, and perseverance, you can achieve your dream of joining the armed forces.

Understand the exam pattern, create a study plan, gather study materials, practice regularly, and stay updated with current affairs.
